Sonia began her optometry training at The University of Aston in Birmingham, England in 1985. She gained a first class honours degree and then went on to complete eleven professional qualifying examinations to become an optometrist in 1989. Sonia worked for several optometrists in the UK before working in Melbourne in 1995 -1996. During this time she gained a Low Vision Certificate (Part I) at the Victorian College of Optometry. After returning to England for a year she worked at the Royal Eye Hospital in Plymouth, Devon and in private practice. She emigrated to Australia in 1996 and worked for several years at the Orange Eye Centre as a clinical assistant to the resident and visiting Opthalmologists.

Sonia joined Hansen Optometrists in May 2000 working in Orange, Bathurst and Blayney, During the past few years she gained a Masters Degree in Optometry at the University of New South Wales and has become an accredited optometrist for the Royal Blind Society (now Vision Assist Australia) and for refractive surgery consultations with Laser Sight Centres.

Her special interests inculde behavioural optometry and low vision as well as general optometric care of the community. She has delivered presentations on behavioural optometry to local groups including the occupational therapists at the Bathurst Rehabilitation Clinic.
