Nick graduated with honors from the University of NSW in 1977. He became involved in Behavioural Optometry with his main interest being in the treatment of children with strabismus (eye turn) amblyopia (lazy eye) and vision related learning difficulties. In this area he has published numerous papers and spoken at various optometric and educational courses both nationally and internationally. He has previously been a visiting lecturer for the School of Optometry at the University of NSW, lecturing both to the undergraduates and post graduates in the optometric masters course. In 1998 he was awarded his fellowship to the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrist and is now a past president of the college. In 1997 he became the first optometrist in Australia to be awarded the title of Behavioural Optometrist Specialist by the NSW Board of Registration. In 1999 he was elected the first chairman of the International Federation of Behavioural Optometry (IFBO), a position which he still presently holds. Nick was recently recognized, by his peers for his outstanding contribution to Behavioural Optometry in Australasia by being awarded the Keith Woodland Memorial Award.
